I get the impression that this piece represents exactly how you felt while you painted it. I understand the feeling, so maybe it's just speaking to me and I'm assuming you experience the same problems. Like maybe you started on a painting of a completely different topic, but you either made a mistake and got frustrated that it wasn't turning out like you envisioned, or you somehow lost inspiration for your original idea or got distracted from the theme. So it's a beautiful painting, but you still feel frustrated because it's so difficult to paint exactly what you originally envisioned and drew inspiration from.
Wow! great painting. I would like to add another reference or two: Magritte (because of the painting in painting effect) and Carel Willing, because of the realism and the haunted atmosphere. I do recognise Escher somewhat in the strange perspective on the easel and painting, but do not see where Dali would come in.
